she gave you the key the night before she left.

we went over the next day: the boyfriend, the best friend, ideas, paint cans, innocent plans.

we painted her room till it was midnight blue,

(the stars shone while the moon rose and fell. the tv blared on all night. at some point, we dimmed the lights. i lost my shoes and gained your tee shirt. it smelled clean, like you. we played house for all of five minutes, but then i decided to cook you breakfast. it was four. we made a few decisions, and stopped before we carried them through. i ended up in overalls for awhile. we both ended up in her bed. the sun smashed through the blinds and woke me up. you had my hand in yours very tight. i thought about toast and craved blackberry jam. you half-opened your blue eyes, only half. you were trying hard not to kiss me. i made it easy; i got out of bed)

and i fell in love with you.
